Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) - Complete Guide

What is SCA and Why is it Required?

Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) is a security requirement introduced under the EU Payment Services Directive (PSD2). It's a form of multi-factor authentication that requires users to verify their identity using two or more different authentication factors:

  • Something you know (password, PIN)
  • Something you have (mobile phone, authentication app)
  • Something you are (fingerprint, face recognition)

Why is SCA Mandatory?

Since Mangopay is a regulated Electronic Money Institution (EMI), they must comply with PSD2 regulations. This means SCA is now required for all users who hold a Mangopay wallet on our platform to ensure the highest level of security for your funds.

How to Complete SCA

During New Registration

When creating a new account:

  1. Complete your basic registration information
  2. You'll be redirected to a secure Mangopay authentication page
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete your SCA verification
  4. Once verified, your wallet will be created and you can proceed with KYC verification

For Existing Users

If you're an existing user who hasn't completed SCA yet:

  1. Log into your account
  2. Go to your Profile page
  3. Navigate to Settings
  4. Look for the "Complete Authentication" or "SCA Verification" option
  5. Click to start the process and follow the guided steps

When SCA is Triggered

SCA verification may be required for certain high-value transactions or sensitive operations. When this happens:

  • You'll be automatically redirected to a secure Mangopay authentication session
  • Complete the required verification steps
  • Once verified, you'll be returned to complete your original action
